Mountjoy Square has been home to some of Ireland’s most prominent figures such as Arthur Guinness, James Joyce and Séan O’Casey.
Once Dublin’s premier Georgian area, Mountjoy Square has been home to some of Ireland’s most prominent figures such as Arthur Guinness, writer James Joyce and playwright Séan O’Casey who set his “Dublin Trilogy”, including “The Shadow of a Gunman”, in the area.
Many historic meetings have taken place in Mountjoy Square such as the Easter Rising preparations and was the scene of the first and second Dáil meetings from 1919-1921. Much of the Oscar-winning film “Once” was filmed in Mountjoy Square.
The Mountjoy Square park contains playing areas for football, basketball and table tennis, playgrounds for children and a green park area.
