Foynes is a Discovery Point on the Wild Atlantic Way and is part of the N69 Coastal Driving route (Limerick to Kerry). This busy seaport was Ireland’s first transatlantic airport from 1939-1947. Foynes was where the first transatlantic passenger flights from the United States arrived in 1939, and it was in Foynes in 1943 that Chef Joe Sheridan invented the world’s most famous drink “Irish Coffee”.
The Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum, situated in the original airport terminal building, recalls all this past with wonderful displays, original film and lots of rare memorabilia. It also features the world’s only full-size replica of a Boeing B314 Flying Boat.
Other Foynes attractions include a forest park with walking trails to the Estuary shore and viewpoints to watch ships passing.
There is a kids playground in the centre of the village and wooded & coastal walks in the area.
