An emblem of Norman lordship

Athenry is the most notable medieval walled town in Ireland, owing its foundation to Meiler de Bermingham who built a castle there c.1250.

The castle consists of a three-storey tower. Some of the original enclosure wall remains. The original entrance was on the first floor and reached by external wooden stairs similar to the reconstruction, giving access to the hall and reception room. Enjoy the audio-visual room and exhibition. Guided tour available on request.

Access to ground floor of castle for visitors with disabilities. Leaflets available in French & German.
